Passing crucial information to the people of Magwi
Initiated by Xchange Perspectives for DED, the Rural Youth Voices Project Magwi empowers locals to share their views through music, radio, and print productions. Radio Magwi FM 92.5 creates channels for dialogue, essential for peace."A radio station that improves the standard of living and passes crucial information to the people of Magwi," says a Magwi resident.
The idea for the Rural Youth Voices Project Magwi emerged in late 2007, leading to a proposal by Xchange Perspectives in November 2008. Establishing an FM radio in Magwi to communicate the concerns of the youth and the community was a response to local needs for media infrastructure governed by peace values. This community-based FM radio station became a crucial addition to the existing Reintegration and Development Centre (RDC) in Magwi, implemented by the German Development Service (DED), which struggled to disseminate information effectively. This project also aimed to foster a sense of local ownership over media resources. Particular appreciation and gratitude go to DED for their commitment to the project, their high levels of cooperation, and especially to Ms. Beate Mueller-Grunewald for her unwavering support and dedication to the project's successful progression.
The project commenced on 18th January 2010, lasting six weeks. It involved selecting participants, training them in Media for Peace, radio and music production, providing technical skills, and ultimately launching Radio Magwi FM 92.5 on 1st March 2010. Out of thirty-five applicants, eighteen were selected, including three specialising in music production. Selection criteria included English proficiency, local language skills, willingness to volunteer, teamwork ability, and eagerness to learn. The selection ensured a balanced representation of gender and ethnicity.
None of the participants had prior knowledge of radio journalism or music production. Within six weeks, they successfully operated the necessary equipment, embodying the vision of Xchange Perspectives. Initially, participants' seating positions were visibly divided along ethnic lines, reflecting deeper psycho-social divisions. However, through increased levels of cooperation and shared goals, these divisions dissolved, and by the end of the training, a pronounced sense of shared ownership and responsibility had emerged among the team.
The future of Radio Magwi will be influenced by local, regional, and national dynamics. Continued training and exposure will enhance the journalists' expertise. The station's potential to promote peace is significant, necessitating peace as its guiding principle. Care and responsibility are vital to prevent misuse of the platform, recalling past tragedies where radio broadcasts incited violence.
To fully understand the significance and role of Radio Magwi FM 92.5, the project report details the situation in Magwi County before the project, achievements, resources invested, challenges faced, and future recommendations for the station's continued success.
